Probe (1974)
63 Bluxome Street, S.F. — Performance
The audience was standing outside the performance area in the dark portion of a warehouse in San Francisco. They were exposed to the physical energy I was exerting and the sound of different surfaces vibrating as I kicked a basketball around the space soccer style. I was moving towards the wall in front of me in small increments. That wall was irregular and frequently caused the ball to go off in random directions. It got quieter as I was forced to run after each kick. However, as I got closer to the wall the kicks became easier to control and louder reverberating through the space. The idea was to shift from control to randomness and then back again. That was the structure of the performance and how I explored the space.
